Hampi is one of the most beautiful and evocative of all historical sites in south India. It was established as the seat of the Vijayanagara Empire in the mid 14th century, a time when art and architecture flourished in South India. Several travellers from around the world visited the empire during this period and wrote glowing accounts of a magnificent city.  Abdul Razzaq, a persian traveller wrote “The City of Vijayanagara is such that the pupil of the eye has never seen a place like it, and the ear of intelligence has never been informed that there existed anything equal it in the world”.   The city had over half a million inhabitants making it the second largest city in the world at the time.  At its peak the empire spread to entire south India encompassing present day Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and parts of Chhattisgarh and Orissa. In CE 1565 the Vijayanagara empire fell after facing defeat at the battle of Talikota. Following this the Sultanate troops conquered the capital, pillaged it for six months before abandoning it.  So extensive was the damage that the city never recovered.  Today only structures made of solid masonry survive as evidence to the glorious past. The site is a protected UNESCO world heritage site, spread over an area of 265 square kilometers encompassing beautiful temples, basements of palaces, remains of aquatic structures, ancient market streets, royal pavilions, bastions, royal platforms, treasury buildings and more.

On this Heritage Hampi Itinerary learn about the exquisite architecture of Hampi’s ruins, hear the founding stories of Vijayanagara and why they choose this blessed land to build their capital, explore the ruins spread across the core zone of world heritage site of Hampi.  This getaway is suitable for lovers of history.

The world heritage site of Hampi covers 265 square kilometers of area, of which about 17% is considered as the core zone. Within this core zone there are several clusters of monuments in pockets of area.  The most important amongst them are the Sacred Center, Royal Center, Islamic quarters, Kamalapura and Anegundi.  Today we will be covering highlights of Hampi’s history, heritage and architecture connected to the Royal center and Anegundi. Royal Center was the Citadel of the Vijayanagara kings, it encompasses courtly and military structures of the core zone. Anegundi served as a cradle city of Vijayanagara and still serves as residence to local line of Rajas today.

We will start with a heritage walking tour of Anegundi. Anegundi is called the cradle city of Vijayanagara because this fortified village predates Vijayanagara by many centuries. Moreover this area is believed to be the kingdom of Kishkindha mentioned in the great Indian epic Ramayana. Every hill, boulder and cave here has a story to tell. The town still has preserved its rich heritage. There are beautiful river side temples, palaces, old ancestral houses with wooden pillars and caves to explore.

In the afternoon we will cross the river tungabhadra to visit the Royal center. Here we will cover a number of monuments – Queens Bath, Elephant Stables, Lotus Mahal, Mahanavami Dibba Platform, Underground shiva temple, Hazara Rama, Nobleman quarters view point, Stepwell kalyani, underground secret chamber.
