This is one of the oldest Museums in India established in 1865 CE. Today it is home to rare collection of archaeological and geological artifacts. It is relevant to our trip today because it houses some of the oldest inscriptions from Karnataka and Bengaluru area in specific. Here we will unravel the origins of Bengaluru. The museum is also connected to the Cubbon Park which is relevant to our trip in understanding the history under colonial rule and events that shaped Bengaluru post independence.
This is the oldest part of what we consider as the city of Bengaluru today. Kempegowda established a fortified trading center in this area in 1537 CE. It changed hands to Wodeyars, Marathas and then came under the rule of Hyder Ali. Hyder Ali renovated the old mud fort with the local granite stone and built a summer palace inside. Today on the northern gate of the fort remains, the summer palace and an armory built by Tipu Sultan also stands hidden away in bylanes of Kalasipalya. Using old maps, works of scholars, paintings we will trace our way through this area and bring the story of its past alive!
